Donglin Temple is located at the western foot of Mount Lushan, facing Lushan Mountain to the south and leaning against Donglin Mountain to the north. It is surrounded by mountains and forests, towering green screens, deep and secluded ravines, and backflowing streams. The mountains surround it like a city, and the temple stands in the middle of it.
Donglin Temple, a pure and exceptional Buddhist temple, is over 1,600 years old. It is the birthplace of the Pure Land School of Chinese Buddhism (also known as the Lotus School), the central center of Southern Buddhism during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and once the second largest center of Buddhism in China.
Today, Donglin Temple boasts towering Buddhist temples, vast mansions, and a vibrant community of eminent monks. It is one of China's most important temples and the premier Buddhist monastery in Jiangxi Province. Within the temple grounds are historic sites such as the Shenyun Hall, the Three Smiles Hall, the Eighteen Sages' Hall (a Buddhist chanting hall), the Chumu Pond, the Congming Spring, the Six Dynasties Pine Trees, the Lotus Pond, and the Sutra Library. To the west of the temple lies the (now destroyed) Thousand Buddha Pagoda of Xilin Temple.
