Changchun Lake, a place name, has two locations: the Wanli Changchun Lake Scenic Area is located in the western suburbs of Nanchang City; and the Qixia Changchun Lake, formerly known as the Anli Reservoir, is located in the northern suburbs of Qixia City. A post road to Changchun Lake dates back to the early Han Dynasty. In the late Western Han Dynasty, Mei Fu, the Nanchang County Magistrate, retired to Feihong Mountain in the western suburbs to resist the dictatorship of Wang Mang. Later generations commemorated his noble character by building the Meixian Altar on the ridge and the Meixian Temple at the foot of the ridge, and renamed Feihong Mountain Meiling. Since the Tang Dynasty, five prime ministers—Zhang Jiuling, Zhang Shangying, Zhou Bida, Wang Anshi, and Zhang Wei—as well as writers such as Ouyang Xiu, Zeng Gong, Huang Tingjian, Chen Shidao, and Tang Xianzu, and military generals such as Yue Fei—have come here to admire its reputation, leaving behind numerous famous poems and literary landscapes.

Changchun Lake is a sacred site for both Buddhism and Taoism, boasting as many as 136 temples and altars. Taoist texts refer to it as the "Twelfth Cave Heaven." Zhaiyan Temple, one of the Eight Famous Temples of Xishan, originally housed a 1.6-meter-tall statue, once known as the "Yuntang Temple," along with an 8-foot-tall bronze lotus platform, bronze vases, a bronze incense burner, and a Thousand Monks' Pot. Near the former renowned Taoist temple, Taiping Temple, stands a "Millennium Ginkgo" tree, 30 meters tall and 7.5 meters in girth. The stone chambers of Ziyang Palace, perched atop the mountain, still remain. Deng Yu, a founding hero of the Eastern Han Dynasty, once visited this place. Nearby are Dengxian Cave and the Tomb of Zhenjun.
