Hongya Danjing, located on the Wujingyuan creek north of Wanli, is one of Nanchang's oldest scenic spots. The cliffs are sheer, with waterfalls cascading down from the north, and the well below is unfathomable. According to historical records , Hongya Danjing was the place where Linglun, a minister of the Yellow Emperor, practiced meditation.

In his poem "Traveling to the Immortal Realm," the Jin Dynasty writer Guo Pu used the allusion of " holding Fuqiu's sleeve with my left hand, patting Hongya's shoulder with my right hand . " In the ninth year of the Kaihuang reign of the Sui Dynasty ( 589 AD ), the nation unified its names for prefectures, and Yuzhang County was renamed Hongzhou, citing the location of Hongya. In his "Preface to the Pavilion of Prince Teng," the renowned Tang Dynasty poet Wang Bo included the line " Yuzhang, the old prefecture; Hongdu, the new capital . " Nanchang's ancient names, Hongzhou and Hongdu, were both derived from the Red Well at Hongya.

Beneath Hongya lies a deep pool, formerly known as Hongjing Cave, covering approximately 30 square meters. Its banks are steep, and no one dares approach. Legend has it that Zhang Yun, riding a snow spirit (a white mule gifted by Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, Li Longji), traveled with five disciples to Hongzhou to sell medicine. In the afternoon, they descended the Huidan Well of Peng Qian, the Minister of the Jin Dynasty, from Wutai Temple in Nanchang, passed through the bottom of the Gan River, and returned from Hongjing Cave. Yang Jie, Minister of Rites of the Song Dynasty, was enshrined in Xishan and cast a golden dragon jade tablet here.
