Cangyuan, located southeast of Baotu Spring Park, one of Jinan's most scenic springs, is a traditional courtyard-style building within a garden, with its main gate facing west. The name "Cangyuan" evokes the idea of a scoop of water in the vast ocean. The site was originally the site of an academy during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and was repeatedly converted into schools after the late Qing dynasty. During the expansion of Baotu Spring Park, it was incorporated into the park and redeveloped in 1964. The quadrangle building, covering 2,500 square meters, features three halls, two courtyards, and a veranda. Its blue brick, black tile, and whitewashed walls create a simple and elegant atmosphere.
The garden contains two large courtyards and three main halls, arranged along a north-south central axis. Verandas surround the halls. Curved corridors frame the garden, adorned with slender bamboos. Within the courtyards, numerous rock formations and large bonsai are displayed. Towering pines and vibrant winter plum blossoms highlight the winter landscape, especially after a snowfall, when the pines, bamboo, and plum blossoms each showcase their unique beauty, creating a scene depicting the "Three Friends of Winter."
Jinan has a temperate monsoon climate with obvious monsoons and distinct four seasons: dry and rainy spring, warm and rainy summer, cool and dry autumn, and cold and snowy winter.
