Phoenix Mountain, located in the center of Yan'an City, is one of the " Four Famous Mountains " of Yan'an . Its highest point is 1,132 meters above sea level. It is the highest of the mountains surrounding Yan'an City and the main support of Yan'an City. Therefore, city defense fortifications in all dynasties were built on the east slope and mountainside of the mountain as a place for guarding the city and stationing troops.
Ancient ruins on the mountain include Zhenxi Tower, Fenghuang Pavilion, Wenchang Pavilion, Liulang Fort, Diqing Fort, and the Turning Point, which is said to have been dug by Yang Liulang (Yan Zhao) during the Northern Song Dynasty to mobilize troops. The ancient city wall, built along the mountainside, is believed to have been constructed in 215 BC , making it over 2,000 years old. It is the earliest, largest, and most intact example of Yan'an's city defense.
Phoenix Mountain has now become a mountain city park in Yan'an City . The stone paths on the mountain are deep and secluded, the thick shade brings coolness, and the pavilion is wind-blown and refreshing. It has become a place for Yan'an people and tourists to climb high and see the distant view, relax and have fun. It is a new tourist area in Yan'an City.
