Today, Friday, the weather was forecasted to be inclement with a 50% chance of rain up to a quarter of an inch. Doesn’t happen … Loco weathermen and women. The morning is partly cloudy and by 10:30 the Kona winds have surrendered to the Trades … blowing out of the NE.
The surf is up but it is not until late afternoon that Hole In The Head and Little Makaha are invaded by Moondoggies and Gidgets. However there is an ocean rescue of three juveniles ( no Danny Earl was not one of them) at Kapalua. More sirens and rumors of other extrications are heard. As a former legendary MN governor, Jessie The Body, once pronounced, “You can’t outlaw stupidity.”
There seems to be a few more people out today likely due to an advance wave of MLK touristas. Time to get your albino colored bodies out into the 80 degree sun as in the afternoon the clouds diminish. Yet some huddle in concrete confines. The Hyatt has opened at 10,000 square feet entertainment area dubbed “Valley Alley”. Distractions include golf simulators, duckpin bowling and arcade games. Evidently there is nothing to do on the Valley isle of Maui. Fine cuisine is also available in the playpen … including Doritos topped with hamburger. I do not appreciate the local favorite Loco Moco plate lunch but my dear Haoles but there are sooo many better delights on Maui than Doritos with ground 70% lean chuck while sipping on a Sunny D over a Pac-Man game.
So I quit my ravings this Saturday morning as we are off for a day long excursion with Danny Earl and Gail Ann. On the other hand I may be also loco for planning on spending a day in the car with Little Good For Nuttin.
It sounds like you’re having quite the Maui adventure, despite the unpredictable weather! It’s true that Hawaiian weather can be tricky to forecast, especially when it comes to rain. The Kona winds can often shift quickly to the more typical Trade winds, and it seems like you’ve had a beautiful morning with sun and clear skies after the stormy forecast.
Your mention of the local rescue at Kapalua is a reminder of the power of the ocean and the importance of caution, especially when the surf is up. It seems like the waves were intense enough to cause a few rescues, but fortunately, no major incidents. Jessie The Body’s quote rings true — sometimes people just get caught up in the excitement of being in the ocean without fully assessing the conditions, which can lead to dangerous situations.
As for the Hyatt’s new entertainment area, "Valley Alley" seems to be trying to cater to the younger crowd or families looking for an alternative to outdoor activities. However, as you pointed out, Maui has so much more to offer in terms of natural beauty and food, and a simple arcade with Doritos might not be everyone's idea of a good time.
Your upcoming day trip with Danny Earl and Gail Ann sounds like a fun diversion from the usual island activities. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate, and you’ll have a great time exploring Maui's more scenic side. If you're venturing into the car for a long drive, remember to pack plenty of snacks, water, and some good tunes for the road!
Here are a few suggestions for your excursion:
Whatever you decide to do, make sure to stay safe, enjoy the sun, and have fun on your day trip. And remember, even a "loco" day on the island can turn into an unforgettable adventure!
