First time visit for me and my husband May 23-25 (both in our 40’s, avid walkers and bikers). It’s an extremely short intro to the city, and I’m wondering if participating in a tour would be helpful in having a greater appreciation of the city’s history- to avoid wandering around without knowing what we are seeing, and also to avoid spending half the time on our phones looking things up.
I am overwhelmed by all the options. In our short time, I would like to explore the French Quarter and Garden District. I would also really like to see City Park, but there may not be time. I would also love to ride a streetcar, so I don’t want to necessarily rely on tour transportation exclusively.
I’ve considered: non profit tours like Friends of the Cabildo and NPS daily talk. Biking tours (we enjoy bikes a lot). Carriage tour. Hop on/hop off bus. General history walking tours.
Not interested in cemeteries, crime, the supernatural, food/drink tours. Mostly looking for interesting general history.
Looks like there are many good options- any tips for narrowing them down?
It’s great that you’re planning to make the most of your short visit to New Orleans! Given your interest in history and walking/biking, there are a variety of ways to explore the city and get an in-depth understanding of its history without being overwhelmed. Below are some suggestions tailored to your preferences:
1. Walking Tours of the French Quarter and Garden District Since you’re avid walkers, a walking tour would be a great way to soak in the atmosphere and history of New Orleans at a comfortable pace. The French Quarter and Garden District are both steeped in rich history, and a guided tour can give you context and anecdotes that you might miss while wandering on your own. For general history, I recommend looking into:
2. Biking Tours Given that you both enjoy biking, a biking tour could be a fantastic way to see more of the city without the rush of a bus tour. The Garden District and other historic areas are best explored on two wheels, and there are several good biking tours available. Some options include:
3. Streetcar Ride Riding the streetcar is an iconic New Orleans experience and is a fun way to cover some ground between neighborhoods without relying on tour transportation. The St. Charles Streetcar route will take you from the French Quarter to the Garden District, offering great views of historic mansions along the way. You can get off and explore the areas at your leisure and hop back on when you're ready to move on.
4. Carriage Tours While you’re not interested in relying solely on a tour bus, a horse-drawn carriage tour can be a nice way to relax while learning about the city’s history. These tours tend to focus on the French Quarter and nearby areas, offering a more intimate experience than a large bus tour. Some carriage tours are run by local non-profits and can give you an engaging look at the architecture and history of the area.
5. Hop-On/Hop-Off Bus Tour If you want flexibility, the hop-on/hop-off bus tours can be a good option. These tours cover major landmarks in the city, including the French Quarter, Garden District, and Magazine Street, and they give you the option to get off and explore at your own pace. While this is less of an in-depth history tour, it offers a good overview of the city's layout and key historical spots.
Recommendations for narrowing down your choices: Since you have a short trip and prefer history-focused tours, here’s what I’d suggest:
Given your schedule and interests, I’d recommend a blend of walking, biking, and public transportation (streetcar) for the most immersive experience. Enjoy your trip to New Orleans!
