Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong), Krabi Province
A magnificent and beautiful temple, its golden chedi stands tall and imposing, visible from afar. It is the tallest chedi in southern Thailand.
Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong) was built in 1940 on land donated by Mr. Plao Thongsiri, Mr. Man Pengkit, and Mr. Nuam Damphan. Originally known as "Wat Bang Thong," the temple was named after the village in which it was located. Wat Bang Thong received the royal charter on February 13, 1953. The boundary of the boundary is 30 meters wide and 70 meters long. The consecration ceremony was held on March 14, 1976. In 2002,
People and various agencies in Krabi Province collaborated to establish the "Project to Build a Buddhist Monument and a Great Chedi in Honor of His Majesty the King's 50th Birthday," at this temple. The purpose of the ceremony was to honor His Majesty the King, who at the time held the title of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. On November 16, 2006, His Majesty bestowed the new name on Wat Bang Thong as "Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol." He also ordered that the abbreviation "M.W.K." be placed on the pediment of the ordination hall. The Buddha image representing the day of birth of the Buddha be named "Phra Phuttha Thaksinchai Mongkol."
The "Phra Mahathat Chedi" was influenced by the Maha Chedi of Bodh Gaya, the place where the Buddha attained enlightenment in Gaya, Bihar, India. Standing prominently in the center of the temple at 95 meters, it is the tallest chedi in southern Thailand. Surrounding the main chedi are walkways or "porches" encircling the chedi on all four sides, with numerous Buddha images enshrined along the walkways for Buddhists to pay their respects. Inside the Phra Mahathat Chedi, a large principal Buddha image stands majestically in the center, attracting the reverence of the locals. There are also beautiful murals depicting the life of the Buddha and decorated with delicate and intricate Thai patterns. It's truly stunning.
