Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong) in Ao Luek District, Krabi, is magnificent. The beautiful temple is golden.
There is a golden pagoda that stands out tall and majestically. It can be seen from afar. It is the tallest pagoda in the South.
Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol (Wat Bang Thong) was built in 1940 on land donated by Mr. Plao Thongsiri, Mr. Man Phengkit, and Mr. Nuam Damphan. Originally, the villagers called this temple "Wat Bang Thong", which was named after the village where it was located. Wat Bang Thong received the royal charter on February 13, 1953. The area of the pagoda is 30 meters wide and 70 meters long. The ceremony to tie the boundary of the boundary was held on March 14, 1976. In 2002,
When the people and agencies from various sectors in Krabi Province joined together to organize the "Project to Build a Buddhist Monument and a Great Pagoda The 50th Anniversary Celebration of His Majesty the King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun was held at this temple. The purpose of the event was to honor His Majesty the King, who at that time held the title of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn. On November 16, 2006, His Majesty the King granted a new name to Wat Bang Thong as “Wat Mahathat Wachiramongkol” and ordered that the abbreviated royal name “M.W.K.” be placed on the pediment of the ordination hall. The Buddha image for each day of the week will be named “Phra Phuttha Thaksinchai Mongkol”.
The “Phra Mahathat Chedi” was influenced by the Mahachedi of Buddha Gaya, the place where the Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in Gaya, Bihar, India. It stands tall and prominently in the middle of the temple, at 95 meters high, making it the tallest chedi in the South. The area surrounding the Phra Mahathat Chedi has a walkway or “balcony” that encircles the chedi on all four sides, with various Buddha images. There are many enshrined along the walkway for Buddhists to worship. Inside the Phra Mahathat Chedi, there is a large Buddha statue in the center, standing out majestically, which is admired by locals and tourists who visit this Buddhist site. There are also beautiful murals that tell the story of the life of the Buddha and are decorated with graceful Thai patterns.
