Wat Suan Dok, also known as Wat Buppharam, is located on Suthep Road in Suthep Subdistrict, Mueang District. Formerly a flower garden for northern royalty during the Mengrai Dynasty, Wat Suan Dok was established as a royal temple.

In 1914, King Kuena, the sixth king of the Mengrai Dynasty, graciously ordered its construction as a "Royal Temple" to house "Phra Maha Thera Suman," the founder of the Sri Lankan Buddhist sect in Lanna. He also commissioned a chedi to enshrine the Buddha's relics.

Wat Suan Dok also boasts numerous ancient and beautiful religious sites and objects, including the large Sri Lankan-style chedi enshrining the Buddha's relics; the Phra Chao Kao Tue, a large cast Buddha image weighing 9000 tamlung (approximately 9,000 chang); the principal Buddha image in the main viharn (ordination hall); and the Lanna-style pulpit.

Wat Suan Dok also hosts annual traditions, including: The tradition of making merit by offering food to monks falls on the 8th day of the waxing moon of the 11th lunar month. The tradition of setting up a royal sermon or listening to the Mahachat sermon after the end of Buddhist Lent every year. The tradition of making merit by bathing the Phra Borommathat falls on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 3rd lunar month every year.
