đNamtso: The sky lake with a blue so breathtaking
On the plateau of Damxung County, Tibet, at an altitude of 4,718 meters, lies a sapphire known as the "Sky Lake"âNamtso. When I first saw this lake, I had the illusion that the sky was inverted onto the earth. The purest blue, so beautiful it seemed unreal, made me breathe cautiously.
Legend has it that Namtso is the sacred site of Vajra Yogini, the deity of Tibetan Buddhismâs Vajrayana tradition, and it is paired with the Nyenchen Tanglha Mountains as a loving divine mountain and holy lake couple. Every Tibetan Year of the Sheep, the merit of pilgrims circumambulating the lake once is equivalent to twelve times that of a normal year, so you can always see devoted believers walking around the lake. If youâre lucky, you might meet nomads grazing by the lake, their sun-darkened faces always wearing pure smiles.
The most enchanting moment at Namtso is sunrise. When the first ray of sunlight shines on the Nyenchen Tanglha snow peaks, golden light dances on the lake surface, as if the whole world has been enchanted. The Tashi Peninsula by the lake is draped with colorful prayer flags, which flutter in the wind, sounding like whispers from the gods.
Tips: Altitude sickness is a real "sweet burden," so itâs recommended to acclimate in Lhasa a day in advance. The wind by the lake is strong and the temperature low, so be sure to bring enough warm clothing; sunglasses and sunscreen are essential because the UV rays here will show you their "colors." The entrance fee is 210 yuan, a bit pricey, but when you see that blue, youâll feel every penny is worth it.
Standing there, I suddenly understood why Tibetans regard Namtso as one of the three sacred lakes. Itâs not just a lake, but more like a mirror reflecting the soul, revealing the purest emotions of the human world.
