【Central, Hong Kong】Old Prison Transformed into an Art Hotspot — A Full Day Deep Walk at Tai Kwun

Located in the heart of Central, Tai Kwun is a space where history and creativity perfectly intersect. It was once the site of the Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison. After years of restoration and revitalization, it has now transformed into a multifunctional cultural and artistic venue that combines history, art, culture, and cuisine. It is one of the must-visit spots in Hong Kong in my opinion.

Highlights: From History to Modernity

📍 1. Central Police Station Compound: A Century of Elegance

Strolling through Tai Kwun, every brick and tile holds history. The colonial-era buildings are well preserved, including the main building of the Central Police Station and Victoria Prison. The high walls, iron gates, wooden windows, and stone bricks all bear witness to the old times. Consider joining a guided tour to gain deeper insights into the police system, the evolution of the rule of law, and prison life, as if traveling through a time tunnel.

⛓ 2. Victoria Prison C Hall: Step Inside the Cells

Enter the actual prison cells, bathhouse, and cells to experience the life of former inmates. Without many words needed, the cramped spaces and cold walls naturally tell their story. Once, I encountered a small theater performance here, and the immersive atmosphere was truly soul-stirring.

🚕 How to Get to Tai Kwun?

The transportation is very convenient. It’s about a 5-minute walk from Exit D of Central MTR Station. Walk up the Mid-Levels escalator, and soon you will see the magnificent red brick buildings and entrance sign. If you just came down from the Peak Tram, walking here is a perfect way to connect your day’s itinerary.

Even More Charming in Good Weather: Sunshine on Red Brick Walls is the Most Beautiful Filter

I especially recommend visiting Tai Kwun on a sunny day. The sunlight slanting on the red brick walls seems to awaken the old buildings; the open-air courtyard often hosts markets, performances, or pop-up events. This atmosphere makes you forget you are in a bustling city and instead feel like you’ve stepped into a tranquil cultural garden.

🕰️ Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday 08:00-23:00
📍 Address: Tai Kwun, 10 Hollywood Rd, Central, Hong Kong
