Just a short ride from Jiayuguan Fortress, the Overhanging Great Wall (悬臂长城) is one of the most dramatic sections of the Ming Great Wall. Built along a steep ridge in the Black Mountains, it earned its name because parts of it seem to “hang” off the mountainside. From the top, you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Gobi Desert on one side and rugged mountains on the other. 🌄
Originally built for military defense in the 16th century, this section served as a critical watch point for guarding the western frontier. The climb is steep but short, and the view is well worth the effort — especially at sunrise or sunset when the desert glows golden.
💡 Tips:
• Best combined with a visit to Jiayuguan Fortress and the First Pier of the Great Wall.
• Bring water and sun protection — there’s little shade.
• Early morning is cooler and less crowded.
