Praying at Yuantong Temple

Yuantong Temple is one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. With a history of over 1,200 years, it is an important religious center of the region.

🏯 History and Significance

Yuantong Temple was founded in the late 8th century during the Tang Dynasty, originally called Putuoluo Temple, and was renovated and expanded several times during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In 1956, the temple was the site of the relic of the Buddha (the crystal tooth relic), an important event that attracted pilgrims from all over Southeast Asia.

🏛️ Architecture and Highlights
• Yuantong Hall: Located on the lowest level of the temple Surrounded by crystal clear ponds and stone bridges connecting to the octagonal pavilion in the middle of the water

• Copper Buddha Hall: Built in 1985 to house a large copper Buddha statue donated from Thailand, it is 3.5 meters high and weighs 4 tons.

• Dragon Carved Pillar: Inside the main hall are two stone pillars carved with blue and yellow dragons from the Ming Dynasty.

• Caizhilu Stone Stairs: Stone steps carved into the cliff face lead to the top of the mountain, with ancient inscriptions still clearly visible after centuries.
