A representative tourist attraction in Kyoto
It's become famous among foreigners thanks to its appearance in numerous media and movies, but...
Kyoto's Fushimi Inari is particularly popular because it's the head shrine of shrines dedicated to Inari, the most common deity.
The New Year's period is particularly crowded, so it's best to avoid it if possible.
Fushimi Inari is particularly famous for its red torii gates, which stretch on endlessly, so climbing to the end can take quite some time. (The higher you go, the more eerie it becomes, with fewer people and more scary.)
The red torii gates are where individuals and companies make donations to the shrine,
praying for their wishes.
The thickness and size of the pillars vary depending on the donation.
The most expensive torii gates are said to cost well over 10 million won.
Just looking at them is fun, so come visit.
You'll probably easily spend a day just visiting Fushimi Inari and Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
