Kyoto Kibune Shrine is a very special, and a little "atmosphere" place, far away from the bustle of the city, but more of a tranquility. Although not a must-visit attraction for foreign tourists, Kibune Shrine is very popular among locals! This time I will share with you what I saw and felt when I visited Kibune Shrine in winter in January, and some tips so that you can experience this Japanese "hidden beauty" for yourself next time.
Introduction to itinerary highlights
The most unique thing about Kibune Shrine is its water sign - after asking for a sign, you have to put the sign paper into the water, and the contents will slowly emerge, which is very ceremonial. If you love to explore local customs, you will definitely not be disappointed here! In addition, if you go in winter, the scene has been burning firewood, full of warmth, kind of walking into an ancient Japanese movie scene.
Recommended attractions of Kibune Shrine
Kibune Shrine (Kifune Shrine Main Hall)
📍Address: 180 Kuramakibunecho, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, 601-1112 Japan
Opening hours: May 1-November 30 06:00-20:00 each year;
The shrine is divided into the main temple, the Omiya and the Nakamiya (association), which are connected by paths. It is recommended to start from the main hall and enjoy the tranquility of deep mountains and valleys along the way, with a very quiet and atmospheric, humanistic and natural intertwined feeling in conjunction with cloudy and rainy days.
Atmosphere experience tips
1. Remember to wash your hands at the entrance before entering the shrine and follow local etiquette;
2. Water dials in the temple, after asking for a fortune in the exclusive pool of the shrine slowly waiting for the content to emerge, super surprise;
3. In winter, the shrine has been burning firewood, the temperature is low without fear of cold, and there is a woody fragrance;
4. From Kyoto city to Kibune by train to "Kifuneguchi", then change to a bus or walk to the mountain road (about 20-30 minutes). The air on the mountain road is fresh but the road is quieter and slightly eerie, it is recommended to return before dark, preferably before dusk to complete the worship.
Live atmosphere sharing
It was winter when I went, it was raining lightly outside, walking among the woods and Japanese architecture, with firewood in the background, the mood was very peaceful. The shrine is not in a lively tourist area, but most of the people who come to worship are locals, and the atmosphere is quiet. For photography, the architecture, trees and light rain are very Zen, and near the wash basin is a photo spot.
Transportation & Food Recommendations
Access: From Kyoto, take the Euriyama Electric Railway to “Kifuneguchi” station, then transfer to the Kyoto Bus to Kifune Shrine (the route is mostly mountain roads, taxis can be booked, but the cost is slightly higher).
Food: There are several Kawatoko restaurants nearby, open in the summer, with fewer options in the winter. You can try the "Kifune べにや" onsen tofu set meal or "Torii Chaya" soba noodles to feel the mountain Japanese food culture.
Practical tips
- The mountain roads are relatively wet and slippery, so wear non-slip shoes
- In winter, the temperature difference between morning and evening is large, remember to bring a warm pack or thick clothes
- There are no shops around the shrine, bring water or simple dry food
- The divine lottery is not only for good luck, the water lottery is the key to taking pictures!
- It is recommended to avoid crowds when taking pictures, can come in the early morning or evening hours
The next time you want to experience local inspiration in Kyoto, Kibune Shrine can be put on a wish list. The rainy winter atmosphere is great, suitable for those of you who like to stay away from the crowds in the city and feel the traditional Japanese culture with your heart!
