Longmen Grottoes - Ancient Stone Craving Masterpiece 🇨🇳

#traveldiaries
The Longmen Grottoes are some of the finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and his disciples, the world heritage located in present day’s Luoyang in Henan province, China.

The grottoes and niches of Longmen contain the largest and most impressive collection of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties (316-907). These works, entirely devoted to the Buddhist religion, represent the high point of Chinese stone carving.

This is a must visit in lifetime and we were simply amazed by the magnificent art and history behind them. Sadly most of the statues were destroyed or stolen due to historical issues.

I recommend to go during off season to avoid heavy crowds! Stay until the night to witness the Lusena Buddha with lights. Simply amazing.
