Shuri Castle (Ryukyuan: 御城‧ 首里城/ウグシク ‧ スイグシク Ugusiku ‧ Suigusiku[1]) is a Ryukyu-style castle located in the southern part of Okinawa Island in the Ryukyu Islands, east of Naha City. It was built between the late 13th and 14th centuries and was the capital and royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom from the 15th to the 19th century. It has a history of more than 500 years and was listed as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 2000. A fire broke out at around 2:40 a.m. on October 31, 2019, destroying seven buildings including the main hall, north hall, and south hall.
