Nikkō: Ancient Temples and Mountain Air Just a Few Hours from Tokyo

Looking for a quick escape from Tokyo’s hustle? Nikkō feels like stepping into a painting, where moss-covered lanterns, towering cedar trees, and waterfalls come together in one unforgettable experience.

At the heart of it all is Tōshō-gū Shrine, a masterpiece of color and detail honoring Tokugawa Ieyasu. Gold leaf, carvings, and mythical creatures cover every surface, including the famous sleeping cat and three wise monkeys.

But Nikkō is more than its shrines. Venture deeper to find Lake Chūzenji and Kegon Falls, surrounded by mountains that blaze with red and gold in autumn. The mix of culture and nature is what makes Nikkō feel so balanced, a place where you can reflect, breathe, and explore.

Tips for Visitors:

Start early, there’s a lot to see, and each site deserves time

Wear comfy shoes for walking the long shrine paths and forest trails

Take a bus from the station to Lake Chūzenji for nature without the hike

Visit in October–November for peak autumn colors

Great as a day trip, but even better if you stay overnight
