If you want to experience Okinawa's past, there's no better place than Ryukyu Mura. Like a "living folk village," this place faithfully recreates the traditional houses and lifestyle of the Ryukyu Kingdom. Past the entrance, stone walls and red-tiled roofs line the streets, making you feel as if you've traveled back in time.
Throughout the village, the soft sounds of traditional "sanshin" music fill the air, and you can even try on a "ryuso," a kimono-like garment. Watching local Okinawans wear traditional attire and create accessories made the experience even more immersive. Creating your own shisa (Okinawan's guardian deity) was especially fun! Being able to take home the finished shisa after painting it was a wonderful memory.
The small gardens, ponds, and bamboo forest paths dotted throughout the area were perfect for a leisurely stroll, and I was able to closely observe the structures and decorations of traditional Okinawan houses. Fall asleep while enjoying cool brown sugar ice cream or Okinawan tofu dessert in the shade.
