Rome is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy and an absolute must-see! Honestly, IMHO Rome is one the most beautiful place in the world. It's a city where you want to explore every alley, look at the details of every building. It's a city that makes you slow down to immerse yourself in its atmosphere.
Another good thing about Rome is the main landmarks are within walking distance if you stay in the heart of the city center.
I visited Rome in October that is why it was really easy to see historical places without the crowds. My hotel was so centrally located that I woke up at around 7.30 AM, took a shower, dressed, had breakfast and was at the Trevi Fountain just before 9 AM every day. It was magical to see it empty and actually be able to enjoy it and take the time to admire this masterpiece!
It’s also nice to see the Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda without people. If you have a bit more time, you can walk to Piazza Navona and see it without the crowds as well (it’s just a 3-4 minutes walk from the Pantheon, so really not a big detour).
On the second day of my vacation, I walked to the Vatican, saw the Pope, and even visited the Vatican Museum and St. Peter's Basilica. The tour of the Vatican took only two hours, but you will not be allowed more time to see all the halls and exhibits.
On the third day in Rome, I visited the Villa Medici which is something like an art school now and walked through the Spanish quarter where I came across scammers.
So be careful, be vigilant and enjoy the trip!
