Located on Tanukikoji Shopping Street at 6-chome, "Sapporo Shinkuraya Main Store" is a long-established Japanese confectionery shop founded in 1960.

With the concept of "conveying Sapporo's sweet culture," they offer handmade Japanese sweets made with Hokkaido-grown azuki beans and domestically grown non-glutinous rice.
The specialty, Hanazono Dango, features a beautifully presented "yamagata itto-ryu" (mountain-shaped, single-sword style) bean paste, invented by second-generation owner Shintaro Niikura. It's a Sapporo delicacy that represents both its appearance and its flavor.

We tried three varieties: sesame, soy sauce, and matcha bean paste. The dango was surprisingly soft and had a delightfully chewy texture. The sesame was fragrant, the soy sauce was sweet and salty, and the matcha bean paste had a subtle bitter-sweet flavor. Beautiful in appearance, this is a Japanese dessert that's highly satisfying, even with just one stick.

The soft serve ice cream was rich and satisfying. The iced coffee's refreshing bitterness made it a perfect match with the dango. The cafe au Lait's mellow flavor complemented the sweetness of the Japanese confectionery.
