My timing was perfect; I visited during the weeks leading up to the Lotus Lantern Festival. Bongeunsa is perhaps the best place in Seoul to witness this spectacle. The entire temple grounds—every roof, every path, every tree—was completely covered in thousands upon thousands of beautiful, multi-colored lanterns. It transforms the whole area into a glowing, vibrant sea of paper and light. The sheer effort and artistry involved in the display are staggering, and the atmosphere is joyous. Even if you're not Buddhist, it's an overwhelming visual and cultural experience. It makes the Maitreya Buddha look even more majestic.
