The Journey to Wu Di Hu
My adventure began in Shangri-La Town, a serene place already perched at over 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level. Formerly known as Zhongdian, this area is part of the larger Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture — often called “the last pure land on Earth.”
Reaching Wu Di Hu isn’t as simple as hopping on a tourist bus. The lake is tucked away deep in the mountains, with narrow winding roads and limited signage. I hired a local Tibetan guide who not only knew the way but also shared stories, culture, and made the journey safe and insightful.
Travel Tips for Visiting Wu Di Hu
If you’re considering adding this hidden gem to your itinerary, here are some practical tips:
1. Altitude Acclimation Is Key
Spend a day or two in Shangri-La before heading higher.
Drink water, avoid alcohol, and rest if you feel dizzy or nauseous.
2. Hire a Local Guide
Wu Di Hu isn’t marked on every map.
A guide can share local stories, help with translation, and ensure you stay on safe paths.
3. Pack for Mountain Weather
Bring layers — it’s cold in the morning and warm by afternoon.
Wear sturdy, waterproof shoes.
Sunscreen and sunglasses are a must at this elevation.
