Tomogashima is a war heritage island located between Wakayama Prefecture and Awaji Island.
This small island, which can be explored in a day, is home to the former Japanese military's 1st to 5th artillery batteries, ammunition depot, barracks, lighthouse, and other remains, some of which can be visited.
It has become a popular spot in recent years because of its Laputa-like ruins,
but it seems to have been attracting attention recently as a sacred place for the anime "Summertime Render."
Anyway,
as a war heritage island, the remains are in fairly good condition, and in a sense, it even feels raw.
Of course, the cannons and weapons were dismantled after the war and sunk to the bottom of the sea under the guidance of the US military, and there is no trace of them now...
In the past, many young people were sent to this place to fight in the war. It's a sobering thought to think they were fighting on the front lines...
(It seems that the cannons were not used in actual battles.)
The Tomogashima ferry takes about 20 minutes from Kada Port on the western edge of Wakayama to Nonaura Port on Tomogashima.
When you arrive at the port, there is a cafe terrace, a plaza, and an information center.
At the information center, you can get a map, advice on how to get around efficiently, and if you want to go to the "Akai Monument" located almost at the eastern end of the island, you must apply for a pass here.
The "Akai Monument" is a remnant of the time when mountaineering and asceticism flourished, and there is only a small stone there.
So, if you are not interested in such things, it's not fun to go, it's just hot! I was told that.
It takes about an hour and a half just one way, so it is recommended for those who have a lot of energy, time, and curiosity.
