Rishiri Island: Nagahama Shrine Dedication Dance
A dance is dedicated at Nagahama Shrine every year on June 20th to pray for good fortune and a bountiful catch.
The Kirinjishimai (Kirin Lion Dance) originated in Inaba, in eastern Tottori Prefecture.
There are records of it being performed by people who immigrated to Rishiri toward the end of the Meiji period, but it appears to have disappeared at some point.
It was revived after local residents discovered tools used in the Kirinjishimai inside the shrine.
Dancers from Rishiri apparently traveled to Inaba to receive instruction.
The dance seems to vary by region, and in Rishiri, dances representing wind and waves are incorporated, evoking the blessings of the mountains and sea.
Address: Senboushi Nagahama, Rishiri-cho, Rishiri-gun, Hokkaido
Access: Approximately 25 minutes by car from Oshidomari Port
