Rishiri McDonald's Landing Monument

Nozuka Ranald MacDonald Landing Monument

Ranald MacDonald was an adventurer born in Canada during the British colonial period.

He landed at Nozuka on Rishiri Island, pretending to be a shipwrecked person.

He was later sent to Nagasaki, where he taught English until he was repatriated to the United States.

MacDonald landed in Japan five years before Perry's arrival.

And it seems that the Japanese person he taught English to served as an interpreter for Perry.

There are toilets and benches near this landing monument, so you can take a break while looking out at the sea and soaking up history.

Currently, there is a program where high school students from Rishiri can study abroad in the United States in places related to McDonald, and several high school students go to the United States every year.
