Borobudur, located northwest of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, is the world's largest Buddhist monument. Built between the 8th and 9th centuries, it consists of over two million volcanic stones and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The structure is shaped like a massive stupa and is divided into nine levels: the square base symbolizes the realm of desire, the middle square platforms represent the realm of form, and the upper circular platforms signify the formless realm. Ascending the circular staircases, visitors can admire over 2,600 intricate reliefs depicting Buddhist teachings and stories. The top level features 72 bell-shaped stupas surrounding a grand central stupa. Witnessing the stone towers and surrounding volcanoes emerge from the morning mist at dawn is a breathtaking experience cherished by countless travelers.
