In Kyoto's crowded hotel market, it can be quite a challenge to locate a luxury all-villa resort in this ever-busy ancient Japanese capital. Hoshinoya Kyoto, launched by Japan’s esteemed resort brand, provides a private and upscale retreat nestled in the Oi River valley on the city's west side—so secluded that it's only reachable by a private boat ride through Arashiyama's pristine forests. Our stay at this ethereal resort, dating back 400 years, was truly rejuvenating. A 15-minute boat ride carried us from the bustling Togetsu Bridge beside the hotel’s lounge, along the clear waters and wooded hills of the picturesque Oi River, to the serene haven where elegant Gagaku music greeted us in the entrance garden. At the second-largest of the 25 private riverside villas, we were enveloped by tranquil nature, the flowing river, and timeless Japanese elegance—this mansion was originally built by a noble in the 17th century. Our roomy villa, rich in history, seamlessly combined modern facilities with Japanese Zen-style decor. Clad in traditional kimono, enjoying lavish breakfasts in our riverside tatami living room, practicing calligraphy with relaxing aromas, and soaking in the vintage wooden bathtub, we were entirely absorbed in the timeless charm here. From the grand dining house led by Michelin-starred chef Ichiro Kubota serving refined kaiseki cuisine, to the floating tea house overlooking the Oi River valley and the guest lounge ensconced in the forest, the impeccable service and exceptional cuisine made our time at this remarkable resort delightful.
