The Tenshukaku was originally built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 as the core military watchtower and symbol of power for Osaka Castle. It has been destroyed and rebuilt through wars, with the current structure being the third-generation Tenshukaku reconstructed in 1931 using reinforced concrete. Today, its interior has been converted into a museum showcasing the history of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Osaka Castle. The Tenshukaku, along with Nagoya Castle and Kumamoto Castle, is known as one of Japan’s "Three Great Famous Castles" and is designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan.
The exterior of the Tenshukaku features white walls and green tiles, with eaves decorated with gold-leafed tigers and kinshachi (mythical creatures with dragon heads and fish bodies), giving it a magnificent and resplendent appearance. Inside, it has 8 floors and stands about 55 meters tall. The top floor is a 360-degree observation deck where visitors can take in panoramic views of Osaka city. Additionally, in 1971, a time capsule was buried in the park, planned to be opened in the year 6970, containing items that represent contemporary life, which is quite fascinating.
The Tenshukaku is open year-round from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with nighttime illumination from sunset until 11:00 PM (only external lighting, no entry allowed at night). As for admission fees, adults pay 1,200 yen 💴, with discounts for children and students, and free entry for those below junior high school age. If you visit during cherry blossom season, the Tenshukaku is surrounded by blooming sakura, creating a picturesque and poetic scene with a unique charm. No matter when you visit, you can feel the distinctive allure of this historic building. #CherryBlossomSeason #Tenshukaku #OsakaCastlePark
