Bongeunsa Temple 봉은사

Most people visit Bongeunsa during the day, but I highly recommend an evening visit. The temple is open until 10 PM, and the atmosphere after sunset is truly magical. The entire complex is gently illuminated, but the focus is clearly on the Maitreya Buddha, which glows softly against the dark sky. The colorful paper lanterns strung throughout the temple cast beautiful shadows, and the hushed silence of the monks and a few dedicated local visitors creates an intensely contemplative space. I was lucky enough to catch the very end of the evening ceremonial service—the drumming and the bell chimes at dusk are profoundly moving. It’s an entirely different and much more spiritual experience than the bustling daytime visit. Don't let the 10 PM closing time deter you—it's worth staying late! #seoulspot
