OMG fam! After 5 days in Tengchong, I literally didn't want to leave 😭! This hidden gem in Yunnan's border has "comfort" engraved in its bones - morning tea in Heshun Ancient Town's mist, watching eggs boil in Rehai's bubbling hot springs at noon, waiting for golden sunsets at Ginkgo Village, soaking in private hot springs wrapped in blankets at night... I could live this life forever! Here's the ultimate guide to avoid all tourist traps 👇
📅 My 5D4N heavenly itinerary (tested & not rushed!)
Day 1: First encounter with Tengchong's gentleness
✈️ Land at Huofeng Airport → Straight to Heshun Ancient Town (30min taxi ride through rice fields!)
→ Stay at hot spring B&B (drop bags & sprint to private hot spring - travel fatigue gone~)
→ Evening walk at Wild Duck Lake (red watercolors like oil paintings, white birds skimming water - every phone snap is wallpaper-worthy)
→ Dinner: Copper Pot Beef (Halal Ma Dong's - beef so tender it bursts juice after seconds, dipping sauce is magical!)
Day 2: Volcano vs Hot Springs showdown
🌋 Volcano Park (MUST ride hot air balloon! Aerial view of volcanic cones like earth's bellybuttons - mindblowing!)
→ Columnar Jointing (God-cut chocolate-like rocks with waterfalls - insane combo)
→ Lunch: Black Fish River grilled fish (freshly caught, crispy outside/ tender inside, mountain spring soup - licked plate clean)
→ Afternoon: Beihai Wetland (grass rafting is therapeutic! Spongy rafts let you touch aquatic plants~)
Day 3: Nature's power at Rehai
♨️ Rehai Scenic Area (sulfur smell hits immediately! "Big Boiling Pot" bubbles like lava - eggs cook in 20 mins with QQ texture)
→ Fertility Well (perfect warm water - locals say drinking helps pregnancy hhh)
→ Evening: Rehai Valley public hot springs (mountain views under stars - too good to leave)
Day 4: Slow life + Wa culture
🏡 Heshun Ancient Town deep dive (wake at 7am! Follow grannies to morning market - pea flour soup & fried dough for ¥5)
→ Heshun Library (Republican-era architecture - sunlight on antique books slows time)
→ Afternoon: Simola Wa Village (super friendly! Drank Wa rice wine, danced around bonfire, thatched cottages like fairytale)
Day 5: Ginkgo Village's golden romance
🍂 Gudong Ginkgo Village (Visit in Nov! Village looks gold-dipped - crunchy leaves underfoot, golden eaves - wear light colors for oil painting photos)
→ Buy ginkgo nuts as souvenirs (freshly roasted - bargain!) → Departure
🚗 Transportation hacks (no detours!)
- Flights✈️: Tiny Huofeng Airport - taxis everywhere! ¥30 to Heshun, ¥20 to downtown
- Train+bus🚄: To Baoshan Station → direct bus to Tengchong (2hrs/¥50 - half flight price!)
- Local transport:
- Taxis: ¥20 to Rehai, ¥50 to Volcano Park (drivers don't detour)
- Private car: ¥300-400/day (includes gas) - essential for distant spots like volcano + wetland (drivers double as guides)
- E-bikes: ¥20/day in ancient town - remember helmets!
🏡 Right accommodation = double happiness!
- Heshun Ancient Town: Pick B&Bs with private hot springs! "Prime Minister's Courtyard" - renovated old house with courtyard-facing pools (nighttime soaks with insect symphonies~)
- Downtown: "Guanfang Hotel" for night markets - must-try Tengchong rice noodles at breakfast!
- Near Rehai: "Valley Bath Hotel" (10min walk to scenic area - includes hot spring tickets)
🍜 Must-eats (with my secret spots)
- Top 3:
1. Copper Pot Beef: Halal Ma Dong's (Heshun branch) - ¥60/pax, glutinous beef tendons
2. Earthen Pot: Heshun Mama's - volcano-shaped hotpot with 10+ ingredients (pickled cabbage cuts grease)
3. Da Jiujie: Granny's Snacks (downtown) - stir-fried rice cakes with egg & ham (plate-licking good)
- Snacks:
- Pea flour soup: Morning market grannies - ¥5 with fried dough
- Roast pork rice noodles: Auntie Li's - red rice noodles + BBQ pork with killer chili sauce
- Pao Luoda: Mengbanaxi - coconut milk + bread cubes (icy & spicy-balancing)
💡 Mistakes I made so you don't have to!
1. Volcano Park balloons: Arrive before 8am or wind cancels flights (I learned the hard way 😭)
2. Hot springs: Limit to 20min sessions or you'll get dizzy
3. Jade shopping: Avoid scenic spots - downtown jade markets allow bargaining (when in doubt, observe first)
4. Ginkgo Village in Nov: Book early or prices double
5. UV radiation: Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days (my friend peeled badly...)
Tengchong's the kind of place you'll ache for - slow pace, warm people, illegally beautiful scenery~ You'll understand its healing power once there! AMA in comments 👇
