Although Okinawa's lesser-known tourist destination, the Katsuren Castle Ruins are a must-see for history buffs. The 15th-century stone walls of the castle, perched atop a cliff on the Katsuren Peninsula, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The castle walls, with their graceful curves, are a renowned scenic spot in Okinawa. From the high point, the curved structure offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. From the north, one can see the northern mountains surrounding Kinmu Bay and the outlying islands of Uruma City. From the south, one can see the Chinen Peninsula, Kudakashima Island, and the Nakajo Castle Ruins.
At the foot of the castle ruins, Amawari Park showcases the history and culture of Katsuren Castle Ruins and Uruma City. Exhibits include artifacts excavated from the ruins, as well as exhibitions featuring photographs and videos.
Admission to the park is ¥600 for adults.
