Sengan-en is one of the most representative historical gardens in Kagoshima. It was built in 1658 by Shimazu Mitsuhisa, the lord of Satsuma during the Edo period, as a villa for the Shimazu family. The garden is backed by mountains and faces the sea, with the magnificent Sakurajima volcano and Kinko Bay in the distance. The entire park cleverly integrates natural landscapes into the garden design, and is a typical representative of "borrowed scenery garden". It is also a national scenic spot and important cultural property in Japan.
In addition to the beautiful ponds, stone lanterns, and bamboo forest trails in the park, you can also visit the palace buildings, teahouses, and samurai culture exhibition spaces used by the Shimazu family for generations. After restoration in recent years, facilities such as the "Guest House" and the "Shangko Collection Hall" have also been opened to fully display the historical background of Kagoshima as the starting point of modernization.
It is recommended to reserve at least 2 to 3 hours to come here. The cherry blossoms in spring and the maple leaves in autumn are very beautiful, and you can also see the snow-capped Sakurajima in the distance in winter. There is also a restaurant "Sakuraka-tei" and a specialty store in the park. It is a classic attraction that combines nature, history and food.
