Starry Sakura: The Springtime Military Aesthetic Miracle of Goryokaku

During cherry blossom season, the star-shaped fortress of Goryokaku, built in the late Edo period, transforms into a swirling pink snowstorm. Over 1,600 Somei Yoshino cherry trees bloom along the fortress's angular contours, creating a unique pink pentagram barrier. From the 107-meter-high observation tower, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking view where geometric fortifications blend seamlessly with a sea of blossoms—the stark military lines softened by delicate cherry petals, painting a romantic Edo-era tableau. At night, the illuminated cherry blossoms and their reflections in the moat create a dreamlike scene reminiscent of ukiyo-e art. The bloom period lasts from late April to early May, and strolling along the star-shaped earthen embankments amidst falling cherry petals feels like the whispers of history carried on the spring breeze.
