Today, Insomnia takes you to Shirakawa-go (白川郷) (Shirakawa-go), a village hidden in a valley in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, which feels like something out of a fairy tale.
Shirakawa-go is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with its beautiful houses with unique gable roofs called "gasso", a roof designed to withstand the weight of heavy snow in winter, which is considered the highlight of this village.
When arriving at Shirakawa-go, we will feel the peaceful atmosphere, far from the hustle and bustle of the big city. The houses here are surrounded by mountains and beautiful nature, which each season has a different charm, whether it is spring when flowers are in full bloom, summer with green trees and rice fields, autumn with colorful leaves changing colors, and winter when the village is covered in white snow. The period we went was winter with heavy snow and rainy season with thick fog, each period gives a different feeling.
Walking around the village of Shirakawa-go, you will see the simple way of life of the villagers who still preserve their culture and traditions very well. You can visit the houses that are open as museums. Try local food or even stay overnight in a gassho house to experience the rare traditional community experience.
Shirakawa-go is not only a beautiful place, but also a place where you can feel the peace, simplicity, and warmth of the people in the community. Every time you visit, you will be filled with good impressions and memories that you want to go back for.
